More than two years have passed since the murder of Tetsu Nakamura, a 73-year-old doctor who has been involved in humanitarian aid activities in Afghanistan for many years. The Asahi Shimbun opened a press salon “I can hear the voice of Mr. Satoshi Nakamura two years after the incident” on March 1 and investigated the background of the incident with Mr. Tokiko Kato, a singer who had been interacting with Mr. Nakamura for nearly 20 years. Reporter Machi Noriko, a former member of the Asian Bureau, talked about Mr. Nakamura’s activities and real face. I will introduce a part of the contents.
Reporter Salon “Tetsu Nakamura’s voice can be heard two years after the incident”
In Afghanistan, after the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001, security deteriorated due to the battle between the US military and armed groups. As the Japanese government issued a recommendation to evacuate from Afghanistan, activities were continuing side by side with the danger to life.
Mr. Kato once said that he had felt the determination of Mr. Nakamura. “I think that the lives of hundreds of thousands of Afghanistan are more important than the lives of one person, so no matter how many orders come from Japan, I will not move from here (Afghanistan).” Mr. Nakamura said so. Mr. Kato recalled, “I think I had the feeling that I had entrusted my life to Afghanistan.”
